I was in the Coast Guard from 1976-1982 doing ATON (Aids TO Navigation)duty from Cheboygan to the Soo to St. Igance where I became a plank-owner of ATON St. Ignace. I took care every light and bouy/marker from White Shoal (west)to DeTour to Thunder Bay Island;Alpena to Petoskey/Harbor Springs, DeTour Village to the Soo to just west of St.Ignace. Many memories there. I was one of only 3 CG personnel in the Great Lakes area (CG District 9)who knew how to operate a sextant. This was needed in order to gauge how far the Cheboygan Crib Light was out of true due to settling (last I knew, prior to any repairs, it was off 41 degrees - quite a tilt to her). I believe I was in line to head up the entire Great Lakes ATON program when Senior Chief Dan Coffey retired, I, however, accepted an offer and retired as a Master Chief with the Navy SEALs. What a great job you all have done!!! Feel free to contact me for tidbits of trivia about them. Honored to have served - pride to have been there.
